About the Role and Mental Health Department

The Albany Health Campus has a well-established Mental Health Department. The Older Adult Mental Health Team includes a training registrar, nursing, and allied health staff. The team is based in Albany but provides outreach services across the region and has a regular visiting clinic in the town of Katanning. The psychiatrist also works with the local geriatrics team to run the memory service. The Older Adult Team has been successful in obtaining funding for projects novel in West Australian Country Health, including the sexuality in dementia project and the ongoing role of a dementia navigator. The team and the service welcomes ideas for service improvement or research which can benefit clinicians and patients. The service also has well established links with the local Rural Clinical School and Universities for research and teaching opportunities.

The Older Adult team is co-located with the other local mental health service, including a 16-bed adult inpatient unit and adult and child Community Mental Health Services. There are a total of five consultant psychiatrists and seven training registrars, one resident medical officer and two interns providing the medical needs for patients and providing a strong local and supportive peer group. The caseloads and on call requirements are extremely manageable.

 You will be responsible for:

  • Provision of the clinical assessment and psychiatric treatment for older adults 65+ years of age or with mental illnesses of aging based in the community.
  • Liaise and confer regularly with general practitioners and other health care professionals.
  • Supervise and train medical students and junior doctors, including a full complement of training registrars.
  • Initiate and participate in research projects which are relevant to the operation of the Mental Health Service
  • Participate in the on-call roster for the mental health team and the ECT roster.

The successful candidates will have:

  • Eligible for registration by the Medical Board of Australia as a specialist in psychiatry.
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or an RANZCP substantially comparable outcome.
  • Extensive clinical experience in older adult mental health.

Information for Specialist International Medical Graduates

We encourage applications from international specialists and international medical graduates (IMGs). We value the unique perspectives and skills that international applicants bring to our healthcare system. Please note, in line with the requirements of the Medical Board of Australia Registration Standards: Specialist Registration it is a breach of National Law for practitioners to use the protected 'Specialist' title if they do not hold specialist registration with AHPRA. SIMGs completing a supervision period with Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry as part of the specialist assessment process cannot be appointed to a consultant specialist position with WACHS until the practitioner holds specialist registration and it is reflected on the AHPRA website. WACHS can appoint suitable applicants as a Senior Medical Practitioner, Health Service Medical Practitioner or District Medical Officer while supporting the completion of the supervision period. Individual assessment of a SIMG application will determine the appropriate classification individual practitioners can be appointed to.

To be eligible for a permanent appointment to the Western Australian public sector, it is essential that you are an Australian citizen or hold permanent residency status in Australia.
