Community Residency Program
The Community Residency Program (CRP) offers Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in community-based care, while developing clinical independence and broadening their understanding of medicine beyond the hospital setting.
Designed for junior doctors at PGY2 and above, the CRP supports those preparing for General Practice training, exploring different vocational pathways, or looking to build confidence in managing patients in the community.

Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) with a new or existing clinical position at one of the following primary employing health services (PEHS) may be eligible to undertake a CRP term.
Primary Employing Western Australian Health Services:
- Fiona Stanley Hospital
- Royal Perth Hospital
- Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital
The CRP features two placement streams:
- Rural CRP – Each placement offers a unique and diverse rural experience, combining hospital-based and community-based medicine.
- Metropolitan CRP – RMOs spend a term seconded to Silverchain, one of WA's leading community healthcare providers.
RMOs will remain contracted and salaried by their PEHS while on placement
WA Country Health Service (WACHS) Rural Placement
Successful RMOs will be provided a unique opportunity to participate in a well supervised training placement for one term and spend a minimum of 20% clinical time in a community setting. Placements are offered in a variety of rural settings across WA.
Information on possible CRP locations and rotations, and how to apply can be found on the WACHS website.
Silverchain Metropolitan Placement
During the placement, RMOs manage patients in home and community settings, contribute to palliative care planning, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver holistic, patient-centred care. For many, the Metro CRP offers a meaningful and career-shaping introduction to the real-world impact of primary and community healthcare.
At the time of the CRP placement you will need to:
- hold general registration with the Medical Board of Australia
- be employed as an RMO at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Royal Perth Hospital or Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital for the clinical year
