The General Practice Hospital Training Pathway (GPHTP) supports junior doctors that have applied, or plan to apply, for GP training within the next 18 months with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and Australian College Rural Remote Medicine (ACRRM) to access hospital rotations that will optimally prepare them for future community GP training.

The GPHTP is a collaboration between the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO), ACRRM, RACGP and participating employing health services (EHSs).

Key elements of the GPHTP are:

  • identification by the RACGP and ACRRM of GP-suitable hospital rotations that are relevant and useful for Australian General Practice Training (AGPT)
  • access to a suite of GP-suitable rotations at each participating EHS that provide GP-suitable clinical experiences.
  • a training needs assessment by the RACGP and ACRRM that factors in trainee preferences.
  • allocation of participants by their EHS to a combination of GP-suitable rotations that will meet their training needs over 1-2 years.
  • the option for GP trainees to complete 2 years on the GPHTP through a unique exemption to training time caps, provided on a case-by-case basis by the RACGP and/or ACRRM.

Eligibility Criteria:

The GPHTP is available to eligible junior doctors who have applied, or plan to apply, for GP training and
hold a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) contract for 2026
at one of the following participating EHS:

- Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group
- North Metropolitan Health Service - including:

Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Health Care Group
King Edward Memorial Hospital Perth Children’s Hospital

- Royal Perth Bentley Group
- WA Country Health Service
- Ramsay Health Care - Joondalup Health Campus
- Ramsay Health Care - Hollywood Private Hospital
- St John of God - Midland Public and Private Hospital
- St John of God - Murdoch Hospital
- St John of God - Subiaco Hospital

The specific eligibility requirements for each cohort are:

New GP Trainees (2026 Registrar cohort):

o Newly enrolled GP trainees are eligible if they:

✓ have secured an RMO employment contract for a minimum of 12 months at one or more participating EHSs (can include split contracts).

✓ will be completing a full hospital training year (12 months). For RACGP trainees, this can include six months of extended skills with the approval of the college.

✓ are willing to sign a Trainee Declaration and seek a Statement of Service from their EHS on request.

Returning GP Trainees:

GP trainees who are already on the GPHTP are eligible to return for an additional 6-12 months (maximum of 52 weeks FTE) on the program if:

  • their GP College has approved their continuation on the GPHTP.
  • they have secured a minimum six-month RMO employment contract at one or more participating EHSs. Note:
  • can include split contracts
  • can include six months in extended skills (RACGP trainees only)*
  • returning GP trainees can ‘step up’ to SMR or similar employment in their second year, if offered a position and it is approved by their College
  • if employed at a specialty hospital in the first year, a GP trainee is not eligible to return to the GPHTP if they plan to stay at the same hospital.
  • their employment contract matches their GP training intentions, i.e., if a GP trainee is planning not to complete a full 12 months of training at their hospital of employment, they must negotiate a contract with a corresponding end date.

RMOs with GP intent:

RMOs with GP intent are eligible if they:

  • have applied to the EOI process
  • have secured an employment contract as an RMO for a minimum 12 months at one or more participating EHSs (can include split contracts)
  • plan to apply for the AGPT within the next 18 months
  • have been allocated to GP-suitable rotations by their EHS.

Please note:

  • The total number of RMOs with GP intent selected to the program is dependent upon the training capacity at each EHS after GP trainees have been allocated.
  • Selection outcomes will not be known until allocations have been assessed by OCMO.

RMOs with GP intent identified later as having enrolled in the AGPT will be reclassified as GP trainees. A Trainee Declaration will only be required if they return the following year.

Please note that once you submit your expression of interest, you will be unable to amend your response.
