District Medical Officer Non-Procedural and Procedural
(Obstetrics and Anaesthetics)
This pool aims to fill current vacancies for fixed term or permanent appointments.
Employment Types: Full time, Part Time, Sessional and Casual, with the possibility of extension(s).
Available Positions:
- DMO – Non-Procedural (Exmouth and Carnarvon) –MP Year 1-6 - $464,212 - $581,182 p.a. pro rata
- DMO – Procedural – Obstetrics (Carnarvon) – MP Year 1-3 - $530,947 - $581,182 p.a. pro rata
- DMO – Procedural – Anaesthetics (Carnarvon) – MP Year 1-3 - $530,947 - $581,182 p.a. pro rata
The above pay packages are inclusive of a full-time base salary, PDL, 12% superannuation and on call allowance.
Please note: If successful, classification and level will be determined based on your qualifications, certifications, experience outlined in your CV and if applicable, assessment outcomes by specialist college and AHPRA registration status.
About Carnarvon Health Campus and Roles
The Carnarvon Health Campus is a vital healthcare facility in Western Australia's Gascoyne region. The Health Campus offers 24/7 emergency and acute care, supported by around 12 beds across general ward. The hospital focuses more on acute care, diagnostics, allied health, and outpatient services, with visiting specialists covering areas like general surgery, general medicine, cardiology, urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, gynaecology. Antenatal and postnatal support is provided along with travel assistance for births at other centres. Carnarvon Hospital also supports number of outreach sites including Gascoyne Junction, Coral Bay, Burringurrah and Shark Bay nursing posts. These are either via road or air.
Procedural Obstetrics duties include:
- Provide antenatal and postnatal care for women in the region via weekly antenatal clinics.
- Respond to obstetric emergencies and provide acute care in collaboration with the hospital team.
- Participate in on-call rosters for maternity and general medical services.
- Lead and support the maternity team, including midwives.
- Use telehealth to consult with specialists and support remote patients.
Procedural Anaesthetics duties include:
- Deliver safe and effective anaesthesia for surgical and emergency procedures.
- Manage pre-operative assessments, intra-operative care, and post-operative recovery.
- Provide sedation and pain management services as required.
- Respond to medical emergencies, including trauma and critical care situations.
About Exmouth Health Campus and roles
The Exmouth Health Service is a modern healthcare facility in the Gascoyne region with a total of nine beds - six for inpatient care and three for residential aged care. It features a 24/7 emergency department capable of handling urgent medical situations, including injuries and acute illnesses, with referral pathways to larger hospitals for complex cases. The hospital provides essential services such as general medical care, outpatient services, chronic disease management, community nursing, dental care and allied health. While it does not offer major surgeries, it supports primary care needs and offers telehealth and visiting specialist services based on local demand.
District Medical Officer – Non-Procedural duties include:
- Provide general medical care to patients at Exmouth Health Service and surrounding remote communities.
- Lead clinical teams and provide mentorship to junior medical staff.
- Respond to emergency presentations and provide acute inpatient care.
- Deliver on-call duties depending on the role classification.
- Utilise telehealth technologies to extend care to remote areas.
The Successful Candidates for DMO – Non-Procedural, DMO – Procedural (Obstetrics and Anaesthetist) Will:
- Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
- Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, or the Australian
College of Rural and Remote Medicine, or equivalent experience at the date of
commencing duties.
- Formal post graduate qualification in anaesthetic, or obstetrics or equivalent extensive experience. A record of appropriate Emergency Department skill maintenance in the last triennium of completion of at least 1 of the following and evidence of continued professional development:
- ACLS (or equivalent)
- APLS (or equivalent)
- EMST (or equivalent)
- GCCA (or equivalent).
Note: International Medical Graduate (IMG) applicants to be eligible for AHPRA registration for supervision up to 12 months.

About the Pool and Appointment:
This is an active recruitment pool which will be assessed on a regular basis by the panel to fill both immediate vacant positions and future vacancies. Please note the below:
- Suitable applicants will be placed in a pool from which appointments will be made when similar vacancies occur.
- Appointments may be made from this pool until 31/12/2027.
