POSITION PROFILE
If you have an interest in advanced skills in General Medicine as part of your Rural Generalist medical practice, then this post will provide experience and training requirements that enable the successful candidate to become an accredited Rural Generalist (RG) with advanced skills training in General Medicine.
Hedland Health Campus is a Regional Resource Centre for the Pilbara. There is a 24 bed in patient general ward and 2 bed HDU which is overseen by two General Physicians, medical registrar and two interns. There is a wide variety of general medicine; respiratory, cardiovascular, renal, infectious diseases, neurology, gastroenterology, endocrine and geriatrics. There is a lot of sepsis, respiratory failure, cardiac disease and complex renal patients. The hospital has a 12 chair dialysis unit and manages complex and comorbid renal patients. There is considerable opportunity for General Medical Procedures including stroke lysis, STEMI lysis, lumber puncture, stress testing, ascitic tap, NIV ventilation and managing pressors and considerable teaching opportunities in complex medical patients by two very experienced Physicians (General Medicine and Respiratory). You will work with the General Medicine team, taking part in daily ward rounds, MDT meetings, admitting General Medicine patients from ED, reviewing dialysis patients, doing stress tests in OPD, assisting transfer of patients to metro (ICU and specialist in patient teams as required) and complex discharge planning.
Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to rural or remote medicine. You will work alongside 8 Consultant General Physicians and 1 Medical registrar and there is ample opportunity to gain good quality and quantity of complex remote General Medicine. To go along with this, the successful applicant needs to be well motivated, organised, and adaptable to working in a flexible role.

OUR PILBARA REGION
With an area covering 507,896 square kilometres, the Pilbara region accounts for 20% of the state’s land mass and is twice the size of Victoria, five times the size of Tasmania and roughly the combined land area of the US states of California and Indiana. The Pilbara region is home to some of Earth’s oldest rock formations and its landscape includes coastal plains and mountain ranges with cliffs and gorges.
The Pilbara region had a population of 62,000 in 2014 (representing 2.4% of the State’s population). The region has a rich cultural history and approximately 15% of the population comprises of those identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. The Pilbara also has a large transient population, which many people working in the region on a fly -in/fly -out basis.
WACHS Pilbara consists of seven (7) hospitals, two (2) nursing posts & health centres, 40 general practices and three (3) Aboriginal medical services.
Towns: Karratha, Port Hedland, Newman, Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Roebourne, Onslow
Population: 59,552 (15% identify as Aboriginal) + FIFO population.

TO BE SUCCESSFUL TO THE ROLE
- Must have AHPRA general registration.
- Must be registered with ACCRM or the RACGP Rural pathway or a fellow of either college (FRACGP or FACRRM)
- Have a minimum of 3 years of clinical experience
- Must have demonstrated a clear commitment to rural and remote medicine.
- Must have demonstrated strong commitment to fulfilling training and providing services to the Pilbaras region.
SALARY
MP Year 1-3 $178,223 to $194,926 pa*
*includes base salary $147,758 to $162,661 pa, professional development allowance $11,380 pa and 12% employer contributed superannuation.
or
HSMP Year 1-6, $300,622 to $377,620 pa*
*includes base salary $226,833 to $293,564 pa, professional development allowance $34,696 pa, and 12% employer contributed superannuation.
Full time (80 hours per fortnight) salary as per WA Health System Medical Practitioners AMA Industrial Agreement 2024. Rates as of 1 September 2025.
The HSMP salary range applies to trainees with more than 3 years of full-time clinical training experience
