About the Rural Generalist Single Employer Model (RG SEM) Trial

The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is trialling a Rural Generalist Single Employer Model (RG SEM) to support the development of a sustainable rural medical workforce across regional and rural Western Australia.

The RG SEM provides Rural Generalist trainees with the opportunity to remain employed by WACHS while undertaking approved primary care training placements across participating rural and regional communities. By remaining employed by a single health service throughout these placements, trainees benefit from continuity of employment and a more streamlined training experience.

Under the RG SEM, WACHS will employ participating trainees in accordance with the WA Health System – Medical Practitioners – AMA Industrial Agreement 2024. WACHS will be responsible for salary and leave payments and will facilitate placements with participating primary care training providers. Trainees may undertake placements with any approved training provider participating in the trial, subject to approval by both WACHS and their relevant training college.

A key benefit of the RG SEM is the ability for trainees to:

  • Remain employed by WACHS throughout approved primary care placements.
  • Retain access to accrued leave and employment entitlements.
  • Reduce the administrative burden associated with changing employers.
  • Benefit from continuity and stability throughout training.

The RG SEM changes employment arrangements only. Participation in the trial will not alter a trainee's college training pathway, training requirements, assessment processes, or progression toward fellowship. Trainees will continue to meet all requirements of their respective training college.

The trial aims to reduce employment barriers, improve workforce stability, and encourage more medical practitioners to undertake and remain in rural and regional training pathways, ultimately supporting improved access to healthcare services for country communities across Western Australia.

About the Pool

The Registrar Trainee – Rural Generalist Single Employer Model (RG SEM) Trial Pool has been established to identify suitable Rural Generalist trainees registered with an approved rural generalist training college as a Rural Generalist trainee, for participation in the SEM Trial.

Successful applicants may be appointed to approved primary care (general practice or Aboriginal Medical Services) training placements and offered employment under the RG SEM for a period of up to 18 months, subject to training requirements and placement availability.

Participation in the pool does not guarantee placement. Suitable applicants will be placed in the pool and may be considered for appointment as primary care training placement opportunities become available.

This is an ongoing recruitment pool that invites expressions of interest from Rural Generalist trainees, with applications accepted and considered at predetermined intervals throughout the year.

Application Rounds

  • October 2026
  • April 2027

Please note that these dates are indicative only. WACHS reserves the right to amend, postpone, cancel, or introduce additional application rounds at its discretion.

Appointments may be made from this pool until 31 January 2028.

Important Information for Applicants

The RG SEM Trial applies to primary care (general practice or Aboriginal Medical Services) training placements only. Inpatient, emergency department, and other hospital-based rotations are not included under the RG SEM.

Participation in the RG SEM Trial does not replace existing recruitment processes for hospital-based positions. Trainees must continue to apply separately for WACHS hospital, emergency department, and other non-primary care training positions, as recruitment and appointment decisions for these positions remain the responsibility of the employing site.

WACHS reserves the right to amend, vary, suspend, or discontinue the RG SEM Trial at any time. The trial will be subject to ongoing review and evaluation, with modifications implemented as necessary to support service delivery requirements, workforce needs, and continuous improvement.
