Position Profile:
The South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) provides hospital and community-based public health services to nearly a quarter of WA’s population as well as supporting WA Country Health Service patients from the Great Southern, Southern Wheatbelt and Goldfields regions. Our hospital network provides services that include the renowned adult burns service, emergency care and heart, lung and renal transplants.

The Anaesthesia and Pain department invites applications for Mid-2026 Senior Registrar and General Fellowship positions. Our Senior Registrars and Fellows are responsible for the Anaesthetic management and Perioperative care of patients undergoing surgical or other procedures at Fiona Stanley and Fremantle Hospitals. The shifts entail a combination of in-hours elective and emergency work, with approximately 25% after hours commitment in both general and obstetric anaesthesia. In addition, our Senior Registrars and Fellows supervise our Junior Registrar cohort under the direction of a Consultant Anaesthetist.

Our general fellowships are available at either 6 or 12 months duration during which there is scope for requesting lists in areas of interest.

A General Fellowship at Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group (FSFHG) allows for training in multiple specialties in the context of quaternary care. A general fellow takes a leading role in managing cases in the fields of:

  • Burns (Fiona Stanley Hospital houses the State Adult Burns Service with a dedicated burns theatre)
  • Dental, maxillofacial and ENT surgery
  • Elective and emergent orthopaedics
  • General surgery
  • Gynaecology, including gynae oncology
  • Hand surgery
  • Hepatobiliary and upper GI surgery
  • Major endocrine surgery
  • Bbstetrics
  • Ophthalmology
  • Plastic and reconstructive surgery (Fiona Stanley Hospital is the major tertiary centre for soft tissue reconstruction)
  • Renal transplants
  • Spinal surgery
  • Urology, including robotic surgery
  • Vascular

Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) is a 783-bed tertiary hospital offering a range of health services including the State Rehabilitation Service, a comprehensive cancer centre, purpose-built mental health unit, maternity, paediatric and neonatal services, and the State Adult Burns Service. FSH also delivers specialised services such as heart and lung transplantations and hyperbaric medicine.

Fremantle Hospital (FH) is a 300-bed specialist hospital focused on providing high-quality aged care, mental health, secondary rehabilitation, planned surgeries and medical services.

  3. Provide a statement / letter addressing how you meet the following selection criteria in no more than 2 page:
  • EC1 - Eligible for registration by the Medical Board of Australia.
  • EC2 - Provisional fellow and above with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists or equivalent Overseas Authority at commencement of employment.
  • EC3 - Demonstrated with examples experience, ability, and ongoing commitment to teaching and education.
  • EC4 - Demonstrated clinical and procedural experience and ability sufficient to undertake perioperative and safe adult, obstetric and paediatric (>2 years old) anaesthetic care.
  • EC7 - Demonstrated with examples active participation in continuing medical education activities.
