Senior Registrar - Paediatrics - General

This is a Recruitment Pool for Fixed Term Full Time and Fixed Term Part Time appointments for 6-12 months with the possibility of extension(s).

Suitable applicants will be placed in a pool from which appointments may be made when similar vacancies occur. Appointments may be made from this pool until 30/11/2025.


Position Profile: 
This position is designed as an opportunity to practice as a junior consultant. Successful applicants will be part of a busy team working with the support of 12 general paediatricians who are enthusiastic teachers and mentors. Team leadership, independent decision making (with monthly weekend first on-call) and a separate paediatric senior registrar outpatient clinic are some of the elements which will prepare an advanced trainee to be a consultant general paediatrician.

FSH has a 24-bed paediatric ward, admitting both emergency admissions, and booked admissions for medical and surgical care. Fiona Stanley Hospital has one of the busiest Emergency Department in the country with a separate paediatric emergency department with attached 4 bed observation ward that sees 26,000 children/year. In addition (but not served by this role) there is a 22 bed Level 5 NICU with 3,700 births per year and gestational age from 28 weeks upwards.  There is also a mother baby unit (8 beds) and a youth mental health inpatient service (16-25 yrs. 12 bed), neither of which are served by this role, but complement the provision of infant, child and adolescent health care. Across the road in the new Murdoch square, CAHS has the new Murdoch CDS and CAMHS.

FSH has a busy outpatient paediatric service with general paediatrics, developmental paediatrics, neonatology, paediatric subspecialties including neurology, nephrology, gastroenterology, respiratory, endocrinology, surgery and immunology in a paediatric adapted clinic space. A feeding team services children under 8y who have a paediatric feeding disorders, and we have full access to radiology services including MRI and other paediatric specific investigations, as well as electroencephalogram (EEG) services. We have an active medical simulation (SIM) program that crosses disciplines. We host University of Notre Dame (UDM) and Curtin medical students.

We are accredited as a Level 2 Paediatric service with accreditation for advanced trainees as General Paediatrics (no perinatal), Acute care (ED) and basic trainees for General Paediatrics, Neonates and Emergency. Up to 27 months of the 36 months of Basic Training may be undertaken at FSH and up to 12 months (Core) of Advanced training (6/12 gen paeds without perinatal and 6/12 Acute care (ED)). We host RACP Clinical Examination annually and have two Directors of Paediatric Education (DPE).

Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) is a 783-bed tertiary hospital offering a range of health services including the State Rehabilitation Service, a comprehensive cancer centre, purpose-built mental health unit, maternity, paediatric and neonatal services, and the State Adult Burns Service. FSH also delivers specialised services such as heart and lung transplantations and hyperbaric medicine.
