WA Psychiatry Training
Western Australian Metropolitan Psychiatry Training Program
About the program
The Western Australian Metropolitan Psychiatry Training Program (WAMPT) provides accredited specialist training in psychiatry across metropolitan Perth. The program delivers training in line with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Regulations, Policies and Procedures, supporting trainees to progress through the Fellowship pathway.
Psychiatry training in Western Australia operates through two accredited training zones:
- Metropolitan Psychiatry Training (WAMPT); and
- Rural Psychiatry Training WA (RPTWA).
This page relates to metropolitan training in Perth.
Employment and training locations
Registrars in the metropolitan program are allocated and employed through one of three metropolitan Health Service Providers (HSPs):
- East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS)
- North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS)
- South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS)
Your employing HSP will manage your employment arrangements, while your training is delivered as part of the WA metropolitan psychiatry training network.
How training works
- Psychiatry training is overseen by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).
- In Western Australia, college oversight is supported by the WA Psychiatry Training Committee, which monitors accreditation, compliance, and training standards.
- Registrars rotate through a range of accredited clinical posts within their allocated Health Service Provider to meet RANZCP training requirements.
- Supervision, education, and on‑call experience are provided in accordance with college standards.
Further detail on training structure, rotations and supervision is outlined in the applicant guide and information session.
