The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) hosts the WA Rural Physician Training Pathway (WA RPTP) for Basic Physician Trainees completing Adult Internal Medicine (AIM) training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and are committed to a rural Physician career.
Basic Physician Training (BPT) with the WACHS Network
The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) operates as an accredited training network and benefits from a Royal Australasian College of Physicians Level 1 training time exemption for trainees on the WA Rural Physician Training Pathway.
This coordinated three-year training pathway enables successful applicants to:
- Complete 24 months of accredited training at WACHS Level 1 training settings.
- Transition with support to a partnered Level 3 metropolitan training setting to complete the remaining 12 months of training.
This pathway offers a unique opportunity for trainees seeking a diverse clinical experience and a career in rural or regional medicine.

Key Information
- Separate Application: The WA Rural Physician Training Pathway uses a standalone application process on MedCareersWA with earlier opening dates, separate from the centralised application process for the East, North and South Metropolitan Networks.
Eligibility
To be considered for the Pathway, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Hold unrestricted general registration with the Medical Board of Australia, or general scope of practice registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (or be eligible for unrestricted registration before training commences).
- Hold an employment contract, or have submitted an eligible application for employment, with a preferred WACHS‑accredited training site for at least 12 months as a Registrar or Resident Medical Officer (RMO) in 2027 (training placement remains contingent on successfully securing employment).
- Have a minimum of two years’ full‑time (or equivalent) postgraduate clinical experience in Australia (or an equivalent setting).
