WA Health invites applications for the 2026 Basic Physician Training (BPT) Program in Adult Internal Medicine. This opportunity is open to Residents and Service Medical Registrars (SMRs) with confirmed employment contracts for 2026.

 

Important Information and changes

📌 This application process is only for selection to training into one of the East, North and South WA BPT Networks.

📌 WACHS applicants must apply via the WA Rural Physician Training Pathway, which is a separate pathway with an earlier application timeline. For more information please see: Basic Physician Training

📌 This is not an employment application. You must already have accepted an RMO or SMR position for 2026 at one of the following health service groups:

  • Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospital Group (FSFHG)
  • Royal Perth Bentley Group (RPBG)
  • Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Health Care Group (SCGOPHCG)

Program Overview

Join one of the three WA BPT Networks:

🏥 East WA BPT Network

🏥 North WA BPT Network

🏥 South WA BPT Network

Each network offers a comprehensive educational program tailored to support your progression through Basic Physician Training. Applications are for a 12-month appointment to a training program. Applicants must have employment for the entire 2026 clinical year except where the applicant is seeking only 6 months of BPT or their employer’s BPT Network Director of Physician Education (DPE) has agreed to accept the application conditional on continuing employment.

 

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you must:

✅ have 2+ years postgraduate clinical experience in Australia (or equivalent) as a registered medical practitioner at the time of entry into training

✅ secure a 2026 employment contract with one of the listed health service groups

✅ eligible for general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia or hold a medical registration with general scope of practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand

✅ meet the RACP Basic Training Entry Requirements for Adult Internal Medicine
