2027 Basic Physician Training

Adult Internal Medicine – Western Australia (RACP‑Accredited)

Applications close: Monday, 24 August 2026 at 12:00 PM (AWST)

WA Health invites Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) and Service Medical Registrars (SMRs) in WA to apply for entry into the 2027 Basic Physician Training (BPT) Program in Adult Internal Medicine. This is not an employment application.

Applicants should read the Download File 2027 BPT Selection Criteria and Download File Application Guide before applying.

Training is delivered through accredited networks across WA’s major tertiary hospitals, providing structured preparation for progression in physician training.

Why choose BPT in Western Australia?

  • RACP‑accredited training in Adult Internal Medicine
  • Supervised clinical experience in leading tertiary settings
  • Structured education programs supporting exam and training progression
  • Dedicated support from Directors of Physician Education (DPEs)

Participating WA BPT Networks:

  • East BPT Network
  • North BPT Network
  • South BPT Network

WACHS applicants must apply separately via the WA Rural Physician Training Pathway.

Who can apply?

Applicants must:

  • have general registration with the Medical Board of Australia (by 1 February 2027) or general scope of practice under the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • have at least 2 years of postgraduate clinical experience as a registered medical practitioner.
  • secure a position, or be deemed suitable for appointment to the pool, for a fixed-term RMO or SMR role of at least 12 months duration at one of the following hospitals (casual or locum contracts will not be accepted):
    • East Network
      • Royal Perth Bentley Group
      • St John of God Midland
      • Armadale Health Service
    • North Network
      • Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Healthcare Group
      • Joondalup Health Campus.
    • South Network
      • Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospital Group
      • Rockingham General Hospital
      • Peel Health Campus

While being suitable to the pool allows applicants to apply, successful selection to BPT is conditional on securing employment with an eligible network hospital/group.

Applicants are expected to secure employment for the full 12-month duration of training. Applicants seeking a 6-month BPT appointment must have approval from their employing Director of Physician Education (DPE); this approval may be conditional on continued employment.

Important: Referee reports — New for 2027 & Action Required

Referee Reports will now replace End of Term Assessment forms. Applicants must nominate two referees within the application form. Referees must be recent clinical supervisors who have supervised you within the past 12 months. If you are already in a BPT program elsewhere, one referee must be your current DPE.

Applicants are responsible for contacting their referees early and ensuring they are available between Thursday 27 August 2026 and Thursday 10 September 2026 to complete the report. Referees will be contacted via email to submit their reference report.

Equity and diversity

WA Health values diversity and strongly encourages applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and people with disabilities.

Key application documents
