WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is offering a unique opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist (CAMHS) to join one of its highly desirable regions - the Great Southern.
This is a vacancy to fill one permanent, sessional appointment at 0.6 FTE (12 sessions per fortnight) at Albany. One session = 4 hours.
Consultant Year 1–9: $815.10 - $1,035.88 per session.
The above rate is as per WA Health System Medical Practitioners AMA Industrial Agreement 2024 (inclusive of base Salary, 12% superannuation, and professional development allowance, pro rata). This is subject to the assessment of qualifications, clinical skills, and years of practice.
About The Role
In this position, you will deliver comprehensive clinical assessments and provide psychiatric care and treatment for children and adolescent in the community and inpatient setting. The caseloads are extremely manageable, and being on the on-call roster for the regional psychiatric service is negotiable.
There is a strong commitment to ongoing education, training, and research with ongoing projects and links with the local Rural Clinical School and local Universities.
Key Responsibilities:

Provide clinical governance across the Great Southern for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Stream in consultation with the CAMHS Regional Team Leader.

Deliver comprehensive clinical assessments, diagnoses, and psychiatric treatment, ensuring that best practice clinical interventions are provided for children and adolescents.

Liaise and confer regularly with general practitioners, paediatricians and other health care professionals.

Supervise and mentor medical students, junior doctors and rural training psychiatry registrars.

Participate in continuing professional development and contribute to education, training and research projects relevant to the mental health service.

Provide a secondary consultation service during clinic hours for General Practitioners in the catchment area.

Participate in the on-call roster for the mental health team and the Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) roster (negotiable).
Great Southern Mental Health Department
The Great Southern Mental Health Service is a well-established service comprising of Child and Adolescent, Adult community and Consultant Liaison service. Each team is staffed by a psychiatrist, at least one registrar, a resident medical officer, experienced nurses, Aboriginal mental health workers, lived experience workers and a mix of allied health professionals.
The CAMHS team is based in the community clinic in Albany and provides outreach to other towns in the region. They see the full range of conditions in the 0-18 age range and work closely with the local paediatric team and other local youth services as well as adult mental health services to ensure a smooth transition of care.
The CAMHS team provides care to individuals requiring specialist mental health support across both community and inpatient settings. The team is committed to service improvement and is always looking for ways to maximise early access to assessment and treatment and to services such as Family Based Therapy which give young people in the region the best chance at success.

Eligibility requirements
To apply applicants must hold:

Unconditional registration with the Medical Board of Australia in the speciality of Psychiatry.

Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrist (FRANZCP) OR hold MRCPsych (UK) and Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Psychiatry and are eligible for specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) via the expedited specialist pathway.

Extensive clinical experience in child and adolescent mental health.

Knowledge of/and experience in biological and psychotherapeutic interventions.

Ability to travel or provide telehealth support services across the Great Southern region.
Desirable
-
Has completed (or is about to complete) the Advanced Certificate in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or approved equivalent.

Experience working in CAMHS community based mental health services.

Experience training postgraduates and clinical supervisory skills.
Supervised practice placements for Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) holding a specialist college assessment cannot be supported for this opportunity. Only applicants eligible for the Expedited Specialist Pathway with AHPRA will be considered.

Suitability Criteria:
- Demonstrated specialist qualifications in psychiatry, with the ability to provide safe, effective and contemporary psychiatric care.
- Demonstrated extensive clinical experience in child and adolescent mental health, including the provision of comprehensive assessments and evidence-based psychiatric interventions
- Highly developed communication, analytical and report writing skills, with the ability to engage effectively with consumers, families, multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to provide clinical leadership, governance, supervision and professional development within multidisciplinary child and adolescent mental health services
- Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary mental health practice, relevant legislation, clinical information systems and quality improvement principles in community and inpatient mental health settings
