Centralised application process

To apply for this position, click the ‘Apply Now’ on the advert, and follow the prompts to complete the application. 

Incomplete applications can be edited at any time up to the closing date.

Once submitted, applications cannot be edited. Please ensure that all documents are attached, and your application is accurate and complete; prior to submitting.

This centralised recruitment process allows you to submit one application to cover your top three preferences for employment as an RMO and/or SMR at participating WA health service employers. 

You must rank your top three positions/hospitals in order of preference in your application.

 

  • If you are applying to WACHS, you will be asked to rank the rural placement hospitals in order of preference.
  • Your application will be sent to your first preference site for assessment
  • You may be considered by other WACHS sites during the recruitment round.

  • If you are applying to SJGHC, you must indicate your preferred SJGHC hospital site:
    • Midland
    • Murdoch
    • Subiaco

Split contracts (RMOs only)

  • If you are applying for a position at a specialist hospital (e.g. PCH or KEMH), you may opt for a split 12-month contract, where you work at:
    • Hospital A for the first six months, and
    • Hospital B for the second six months of the 2026 clinical year.

Split contracts are available between a specialist hospital and either another specialist or a general hospital.

You must include at least one non-split option in your three preferences.
Your cover letter should explain the reason(s) for your split contract request.

If your preferred split option is not listed, please choose the one most closely aligned and include your request in your cover letter.

  • Yes.  You can nominate up to THREE preferences.

  • No. You are only required to submit ONE application to cover your THREE preferences however the selection criteria may be different for your preferences, so you will need to address the selection criteria related to your preferences.
  • Refer to the Application Selection Criteria which will be available as part of the MedCareersWA job advertisement.

Important dates

Applications are made through the MedCareersWA online portal. 

Referees may be contacted after this date – it is very important their contact email is correct, and they are available to do the reference check

Creating your CV

You are required to complete a statement that clearly demonstrate how your skills and experience make you capable and suitable for the position you are applying for.

The selection criteria will be attached with the advertised position on MedCareersWA during the application period. You need to address each of the criteria for the position or positions that you with to preference.

The word limit for each selection criterion is up to 500 words.

Selection Criteria

 

When submitting your application, a cover letter is optional unless specifically stated in the advertisement. A well‑written cover letter gives you the opportunity to highlight your relevant skills, experience and motivation for the role. 

How to write your cover letter

  • You may choose to upload up to two recent End of Term Assessment Forms and/or WRIG‑30s with your application to help demonstrate your suitability for the position (if you are currently employed by an Australian health service). 
  • Any forms you upload must be current. This means they should be from your most recent term rotations, or from terms completed within the last six months.
  • WRIG‑30s are work performance reports for international medical graduates who hold limited or provisional registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

  • Yes. Your cover letter provides a good opportunity to highlight information you have not covered in your selection criteria responses. Also, make sure to include any details of your preferred part-time work (days, hours) in your cover letter.
  • If applying to St John of God Health Care (SJGHC), please indicate in your cover letter your preferred SJGHC hospital site (Midland Public and Private Hospitals, Murdoch Hospital or Subiaco Hospital). 
  • If applying to WACHS, the information in the cover letter is essential to assist the selection panel to understand your ideal location within WACHS, whether you have specific requirements about full-time or part-time work, and whether you are applying with a partner. This will allow WACHS to offer you the options which are most aligned with your professional and personal needs. 
  • WACHS also need to know if you have any rural bonding commitments

  • Focus on addressing your first preference, however, it may be worth mentioning the reason for your subsequent preferences.

  • No. You do not need notarised copies of documents to apply for this recruitment process.

  • No, if you are on a 3-year intern contract and wish to remain at that site, you only need to let us know your intentions.

Nominating your preferred hospital

This centralised recruitment process allows you to submit one application to cover your top three preferences for employment as an RMO and/or SMR at participating WA health service employers. 

You must rank your top three positions/hospitals in order of preference in your application.

Please note the following important details:

WA Country Health Service (WACHS)

  • If you are applying to WACHS, you will be asked to rank the rural placement hospitals in order of preference.
  • Your application will be sent to your first preference site for assessment but may be considered by other WACHS sites during the recruitment round.


St John of God Health Care (SJGHC) 

  • If you are applying to SJGHC, you must indicate your preferred SJGHC hospital site:
    • Midland,
    • Murdoch or
    • Subiaco

  • If you’re applying to a specialist hospital (such as PCH or KEMH), RMOs can request a split 12‑month contract—this means working six months at one hospital and six months at another during the clinical year. 
  • Split contracts can be between a specialist hospital and either another specialist hospital or a general hospital. 

When listing your three preferences, you must include at least one option that is not split. 


Please explain why you’re requesting a split contract in your cover letter.

  • You can change your preferences any time before applications close.
  • Once the application period has closed, we can’t accept any changes, including changing the order of your hospital preferences.
  • Please make sure your preferences are final before submitting your application.

  • No. After applications close, hospital preferences cannot be changed for any reason, including the order in which they are listed.

  • If you are interested in a rural rotation, ensure that you preference an employer that offers a rural rotation.
  • Include your request in your cover letter. 

  • If you are interested in the Community Residency Program you need to secure an employment contract for 2027 at one of the participating employing hospitals (RPBG, SCGOPHCG or FSFHG) AND submit a separate application through the relevant “2027 Community Residency Program” (metro or rural) vacancy.

  • The General Practice (GP) Hospital Training Pathway provides participants with access to GP-suitable rotations that will facilitate their preparation for community GP training.
  • If you plan to apply to future intakes of the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) and wish to access GP-suitable rotations, please identify ‘General Practice’ as a preference when completing the ‘training intentions’ section in your MedCareersWA application.
  • This will enable the GP Project team to provide you with information on the Pathway and how to apply.

 

  • You should apply for an RMO position as your first preference with a special note in your cover letter that would you like to step up to an SMR.
  • Alternatively, you can apply for a registrar position through the mid-year recruitment process or liaise directly with your medical workforce team.

Referees

  • You must nominate two professional referees.
  • At least one referee must be a recent clinical supervisor who has supervised you within the past 12 months.

  • You should contact your referees before submitting your application to confirm that they agree to provide a confidential referee report.
  • Referees will only be contacted after applications close, during the assessment and selection phase.
  • Make sure your referees are available during this period and that their email addresses are correct, as delays or missing reports may affect your application.

✅ Tip: Double‑check referee email addresses before submitting your application.

  • If suitable referee reports are not received in time, this may negatively impact the assessment of your application and could result in you not being considered for an offer.

  • Detailed guidance on selecting referees and managing referee reports is available in the How to apply section of this website.
  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to review this information before submitting their application.

For the RMO/SMR recruitment process, please also ensure you meet the specific referee requirements outlined above, as failure to obtain suitable referee reports in time may affect the assessment of your application.

Position Titles Explained

A resident medical officer (RMO) who has completed internship and holds registration with the Medical Board of Australia. They work in a clinical team and are supervised by senior doctors in the team and consultants.

Other terminology used for RMOs are Junior Medical Officer (JMOs), Resident Doctor, House Officer or Senior House Officer

Award classification: Resident Medical Officer

Award:  WA HEALTH SYSTEM – MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS – AMA INDUSTRIAL

Postgraduate year/s (PGY): PGY2-4

This may be known as an FY2 (Foundation Year 2), House Officer, Hospital Medical Officer (HMO) or Trainee Medical Officer (TMO) in other jurisdictions

A Service Medical Registrar (SMR) is a non-specialist appointed to a non-training – non accredited position. Their qualifications and experiences will vary. They will work across a range of specialties in medicine and may supervise interns and resident medical officers.

Other terminology used for SMRs are: Career Medical Officer, Unaccredited Registrar, specialty doctor/trainee (ST), Principal House Officer (PHO) or Senior House Officer (SHO)

Award classification:  Registrar

Award: WA HEALTH SYSTEM – MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS – AMA INDUSTRIAL

Postgraduate year/s (PGY): Usually PGY4 and above. However, step up arrangements can also be made for RMOs less than PGY4.

Assessment and selection

  • All applications first go through an eligibility screening by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO).
  • This checks that you meet the minimum eligibility requirements.
  • Applications that do not meet these requirements will not progress any further.
  • If your application is eligible, it will then be assessed by the selection panel at the hospital you have listed as your first preference.

  • If your first‑preference hospital assesses your application as unsuitable, this assessment applies across the entire recruitment pool.
  • This means your application will not progress to other hospitals.

  • Yes. The process is competitive and merit‑based.
  • Applications are independently assessed against work‑related requirements and the expected outcomes of the role, in line with Public Sector Commission (PSC) standards.

  • All applications are assessed against the Foundation Selection Criteria, as outlined in the Application Selection Criteria attached to the job advertisement.
  • If you preference a position with additional selection criteria, you will also be assessed against those criteria.
  • If you do not meet the additional criteria but are assessed as suitable against the Foundation Selection Criteria, you may still be considered suitable for the RMO pool.

  • Yes. Your statement addressing the selection criteria is mandatory and forms a key part of the assessment.

  • If your application is assessed as suitable, you will be recommended for inclusion in the suitable pool.
  • Being in the suitable pool means you may be considered for employment, but it does not guarantee an offer.

  • Some employers may choose to conduct interviews as part of their assessment.
  • If you are selected for an interview, the employer will contact you directly by email with the details.
  • You are responsible for responding and ensuring you are available to attend interviews during the assessment period.

  • While OCMO manages the central recruitment process and conducts the initial eligibility screening, the final decision to offer employment rests with the employing health service.

  • Yes. Appointment to the suitable pool may be subject to satisfactory references.
  • Some health services may require at least two items of reference material before making an offer of employment. These may include:
    • Referee reports
    • End of Term Assessment Forms (EOTAs)*
    • WRIG‑30s*
  • Employing health services can accept a combination of these documents, provided they demonstrate satisfactory performance.
  • Final assessment decisions are at the discretion of the employing health service.

* Documents must be from an Australian employing health service. It is preferred that EOTAs or WRIG‑30s are from your most recent terms, or from terms completed within the last six months.

  • An assessment panel from your first preference employer will review your application and determine your ‘suitability’ to the pool.
  • Suitability’ means that you meet the selection criteria for the role that you have applied for.  

  • Your application will only be visible to your first preference employer in the first instance.
  • If you have not been offered a position by the conclusion of first round offers, your application will then be visible by all sites allowing any of the employers to offer you a position should they have remaining vacancies.

Assessment Outcomes, Offers and Next Steps

  • If you are assessed as suitable, you will be placed into the recruitment pool and notified by email.
  • Being placed in the pool is not a job offer. It means you are eligible to be considered for employment by participating employers.

  • Applicants who are assessed as not suitable for the recruitment pool will also be notified by email.
  • Your notification letter will include contact details if you wish to seek feedback about your application or the selection process.

  • Yes. If you are assessed as not suitable, you may discuss your application with the employer that reviewed it.
  • The contact details for requesting feedback will be included in your notification letter.

  • Under the Public Sector Management (Breaches of Public Sector Standards) Regulations 2005, you may lodge a breach claim if you believe an Employment Standard has been breached and you have been adversely affected.
  • Further information about the Employment Standards and the breach process is available at www.publicsector.wa.gov.au

  • Employers make offers to suitable applicants from the recruitment pool.
  • Offer rounds will commence from 17 August 2026.
  • Offer notification emails will include:
      • the employing health service
      • contract duration and dates
      • type of employment
  • All offers are sent to the email address listed in your MedCareersWA profile.

  • You can check the status of your application and respond to offers online through MedCareersWA.

  • Your offer notification email will include an expiry date and time, which is typically four days from the time the offer is issued.
  • If you do not respond by the deadline, the offer will be automatically forfeited, and your application will return to the recruitment pool.
  • There is no guarantee that a forfeited offer will be reissued or that further offers will be made.

  • Applicants who remain in the suitable pool but do not receive an offer for an RMO or SMR position will be notified by email when the recruitment process closes.

  • If you ACCEPT an offer, the employer is notified and your application is no longer available in the suitable pool.  
  • You will not receive any further offers of employment from this process. 

  • If you DECLINE an offer, the employer is notified, and your application will be returned to the suitable pool or removed from the pool depending on your selected response to the offer email.  
  • If you wish to be considered for further offers, your application will be returned to the suitable pool for consideration as vacancies arise.
  • Please note that there is no guarantee you will receive another offer

  • If you do not respond to an offer by the deadline, the offer becomes void and is assumed to be declined.
  • If you miss the deadline but wish to accept the offer, please contact the employer’s medical workforce team as soon as possible to discuss. 

  • Some positions are highly sought-after, and the selection process is very competitive.  
  • If you are unsuccessful in gaining an offer from your first preference hospital/position, your application will be considered by all participating health services. 
  • If you have received an email indicating you are ‘suitable’, your first preference employer will then determine if they will offer you a position at their site.  
  • The employer’s decision may be based on the following:
    • Number of vacancies available at the site
    • Speciality criteria required to work at their site (e.g. speciality sites such as PCH, KEMH & WACHS)
    • Secondary assessment processes, e.g. interviews with the employer.

  • Once an offer is accepted, the next step is for the employer to send you the conditional contract paperwork.
  • Any further enquiries regarding offers should be directed to your employer’s medical workforce team. 
  • It is essential that you accept your offer online via MedCareersWA AND formally respond to any notification sent to you by the employer.
