WA Cancer Fellowships
The Department of Health WA Cancer Fellowship Program is a vital workforce development initiative aimed at improving health outcomes for Western Australians affected by cancer.
This program supports medical practitioners in advancing their expertise through specialised training and cancer research that extends beyond traditional clinical pathways.
This program is designed to foster innovation, build capacity, and ultimately enhance cancer care across Western Australia.

Advancing Cancer Research and Care in WA
The WA Cancer Fellowships are instrumental in addressing the complex and evolving challenges within Western Australia's health system. They support research projects that align with the WA Cancer Plan 2020–2025, the national Australian Cancer Plan, and other key health reform initiatives.
By targeting critical public health issues, promoting patient-centered care, and responding to emerging health risks, the fellowships aim to enhance cancer outcomes for all Western Australians—including those in rural, remote, and Aboriginal communities.
The program champions multidisciplinary collaboration and consumer involvement to ensure research leads to meaningful improvements in health policy and clinical practice.
Fellowship Streams
The program offers two distinct funding streams, each running over a 12-month period:
- Research Stream: Supports fellows in conducting cancer-related research, including basic clinical, health service, or population health research. Projects may be standalone, a series of smaller studies, or a defined component of a larger research initiative—provided they have clear, achievable outcomes within the fellowship period.
- Training Stream: Enables fellows to gain hands-on experience in new techniques and approaches to cancer screening, diagnosis, and care. Training is typically delivered within hospital departments under the guidance of specialists. Fellows are expected to document their learning outcomes through a logbook or audit.
Key Information
Fellowships are not a substitute for clinical staffing. Routine hospital duties unrelated to the fellowship plan must be funded by the administering institution.
Projects focused solely on quality assurance, clinical audits, needs analyses, or literature reviews are not eligible for funding.
