Resident Medical Officer
A resident medical officer (RMO) has completed internship and is eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. RMOs work in a clinical team and are supervised by senior doctors in the team and consultants.
Other terminology used for RMOs are Junior Medical Officer (JMOs), Resident Doctor, House Officer or Senior House Officer.
This may be known as an FY2 (Foundation Year 2), House Officer, Hospital Medical Officer (HMO) or Trainee Medical Officer (TMO) in other jurisdictions.
Award classification: Resident Medical Officer
Postgraduate year/s (PGY): Usually PGY 2 – 4
Service Medical Registrar
A Service Medical Registrar (SMR) is a non-specialist appointed to a non-training – non accredited position. Qualifications and experiences can vary. SMRs work across a range of specialties in medicine and may supervise interns and resident medical officers.
This position is not a RMO position but traditionally is recruited as part of the RMO recruitment campaign.
Other terminology used for SMRs are: Career Medical Officer, Unaccredited Registrar, Principal House Officer (PHO) or Senior House Officer (SHO)
Award classification: Registrar
Postgraduate year/s (PGY): Usually PGY4 and above. However, step up arrangements can also be made for RMOs less than PGY4.
