Position Location: Kimberley - Broome
Step into a rewarding and dynamic clinical role where your expertise will shape healthier futures for one of Australia’s most unique and culturally diverse regions. WA Country Health Service (WACHS), Kimberley is seeking an experienced, motivated and highly skilled Consultant in Public Health Medicine to join our Population Health Unit in Broome.
If you are passionate about public health and thrive in collaborative, cross-cultural environments, this fixed-term appointment offers the chance to deliver meaningful change while experiencing the lifestyle and natural beauty of the Kimberley region.
About the Role
As a Consultant in Public Health Medicine, you will play a key role in supporting the Public Health Manager, leading the disease control team, and guiding strategies to protect and improve the health of the Kimberley population. You will provide public health and clinical medical expertise in the identification and management of communicable and non-communicable diseases, as well as other emerging public health issues.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural environment with a strong focus on Indigenous health and remote service delivery. Patients in the Kimberley often present with complex comorbidities including rheumatic heart disease. Within a highly skilled team, you will manage notifications of infectious diseases rarely seen in metropolitan settings, such as leprosy, melioidosis, and flaviviruses. The region faces a significant burden of both infectious and non-infectious disease due to inequities in the social determinants of health.
You will regularly coordinate outbreak investigations and interventions and collaborate with Aboriginal health staff and community-controlled health organisations to design programs that reflect local priorities.
Whilst based in Broome, there may be a requirement to work across other hospitals and clinics within the Kimberley region.
About the Region:
The Kimberley is Western Australia's northernmost region, with a coastline closer to South-East Asia than Perth. Bordered by the Pilbara region to the south and Northern Territory to the east, the 424,517 square kilometres region has fewer people per square kilometre than almost any other place on Earth.
Living in Broome offers an unparalleled lifestyle, with its famous beach lifestyle and tropical beauty. You will have access to excellent schooling and housing choices, making it an ideal place to settle down and enjoy a relaxed yet fulfilling life.
The West Kimberley is renowned for its dramatic and beautiful landscapes, including the towering cliffs, rocky headlands, sandy beaches, natural rivers, spectacular waterfalls and thousands of islands off the remote sandstone coast. Characterised by its distinct wet and dry seasons, the Kimberley experiences a sub-tropical/tropical climate - May to October is the dry season, and November to April is the wet season. With a balmy climate, breathtaking scenery, unique flora and fauna and a great variety of adventure and cultural experiences, the Kimberley offers a fantastic lifestyle that is family-friendly and supportive.
Our hospitals include Broome Health Campus, Fitzroy Crossing Hospital, Derby Hospital, Halls Creek Hospital, Kununurra Hospital and Wyndham Hospital.
