POSITION PROFILE
Registrar positions, TS1-TS4, are available for ACEM trainees to experience rural Emergency Medicine in a supportive and friendly environment. Rostering is flexible and includes education time.
Geraldton ED is provisionally accredited by ACEM for 12 months training, including at TS4 level and for the Paediatric EM requirement. We are a linked ED, supported by Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
There is a well established ED registrar teaching program, which includes 4 hours/week protected teaching time, regular simulations and ultrasound teaching. A significant proportion of ED registrar teaching involves joint online sessions with Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Trainees preparing for the ACEM Primary or Fellowship Examination are also able to participate, remotely or in person, in the exam preparation sessions at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. ACEM trainees have ample opportunity to assist in the delivery of Emergency Medicine education across both sites.
Geraldton Hospital is the major medical resource centre for the Midwest district of WA. The ED sees approximately 36,000 presentations/year with high acuity and an admission rate of about 22%. A highly varied casemix allows exposure to all aspects of Emergency Medicine, including Indigenous Health.
Geraldton Health Campus is undergoing significant redevelopment, with a brand new Emergency Department, an 8 bed ICU and an Acute Psychiatric Unit expected to open in mid 2026.
Geraldton ED is well supported by a large cohort of very senior emergency medicine practitioners (FACEMs, FACRRMs, FRACGPs and SMPs), providing consistent and expert supervision to our registrars, including ample opportunity to learn and practise advanced EM procedures. There is opportunity for the ED registrars to regularly rotate to theatre for airway procedures with the anaesthetics department.
Geraldton is part of WA’s Coral Coast and is world renowned for an extensive host of water sports including spectacular kitesurfing, windsurfing, fishing and diving. The Abrolhos Islands are 70km off shore and have many fantastic diving and snorkeling locations. Nearby national parks are great for hiking and camping. It is a very sociable and inclusive multicultural community, with great schools and higher education offerings.
