Applicants must have completed the Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Part 2 Clinical Examination by July 2025.
The Medical Workforce Department at Royal Perth Hospital, only administers these rotations, with successful applicants appointed to any of the infectious diseases advanced training posts within WA Health.
Position Profile:
Positions are available to the WA Advanced Training Programme in Infectious Diseases which offers the opportunity for 6 or 12 months rotations for Trainees registered with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) for Advanced Training in Infectious Diseases. The adult hospital infectious diseases services in Perth provide a comprehensive, best practice infectious diseases service to Fiona Stanley, Royal Perth and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospitals, with newer placements being available at St John of God Midland Hospital and Joondalup Health Service. Each hospital provides inpatient and outpatient services including ambulatory care and antimicrobial stewardship, and the larger centres may provide experience in subspecialty areas such as HIV medicine, transplant associated infections and tuberculosis. Medical Practitioners committed to entering, or continuing in, a training program in infectious diseases, and who have appropriate qualifications registrable in WA, are invited to apply to the WA Infectious Diseases Training Program for 2026. All positions in the program are accredited for training to attain the Fellowship of the RACP, and for trainees seeking combined clinical microbiology fellowships with the RCPA. Successful applicants will be allocated to one of the five adult hospitals in Perth.
Each successful applicant will be appointed for 12 months to work in the Infectious Diseases Department of one of the five adult teaching hospitals (i.e. Fiona Stanley, Royal Perth, Sir Charles Gairdner, St John of God Midland and Joondalup Health Campus). Under special circumstances, the option of 6-month rotations between hospitals may be considered. It is an expectation that no more than 12 months of training will occur in the one department and existing trainees must re-apply for a position the following year.
Area Profile:
Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) is located within the heart of the City of Perth; and is part of the Royal Perth Bentley Group (RPBG). RPH is the tertiary referral centre for the East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS).
The Infectious Diseases (ID) Service provides a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient care for a wide spectrum of conditions, including ICU/critical care infections, tropical and travel-related illnesses, mycobacterial infections, HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and other complex infections. The service plays a key role in supporting multidisciplinary clinical care at the Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) site, working closely with the State Trauma Service, the Orthopaedic Infection Service, and a large Multidisciplinary Foot Ulcer Service. Subspecialty ID care is also delivered through the Anita Clayton Centre, including management of patients with tuberculosis and leprosy. Additionally, the ID team manages the Intravenous Diseases Ambulatory Care unit (IDAC) based at RPH. The service is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical trials, and ongoing research initiatives.
The Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) Department of Infectious Diseases has expertise in all aspects of infectious diseases, including community and hospital-acquired infection, infections in immunocompromised hosts, viral hepatitis and HIV, tropical and travel related infections, antimicrobial use, Covid clinical support and antimicrobial hypersensitivity. Core clinical services provided by the Department include: inpatient consultative services, outpatient clinics in general infectious diseases, HIV and viral hepatitis, and diabetic foot infection, the SCGH Healthy antimicrobial Prescribing Initiative (HAPI) and the Hospital in the Home (Home Link) outpatient IV antimicrobial therapy program. Other important functions of the Department include infection control and active participation in multidisciplinary rounds and meetings with other Departments.

We have three clinics a week, general ID (e.g. travel infections, HIV, Hep B, IE, TB etc.), HITH clinic and multidisciplinary foot ulcer clinic. We also support a moderate volume of vascular surgical presentations through our busy multidisciplinary foot ulcer clinic and small volumes of orthopaedic cases. Other services include antimicrobial stewardship (ICU and gen surg.), infection prevention and control (including staff health), junior doctor/medical student support and teaching. As a department we also have a strong research interest. The department is supported by five collegial ID physicians and one AMS pharmacist. Australian Clinical Laboratories is the contracted microbiology provider with whom we have a good working relationship.
The Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) Infectious Diseases service provides inpatient and outpatient consulting services for the full range of infectious diseases, including HIV, sexually transmissible infections (STIs), viral hepatitis, infections in the immunocompromised, tropical and travel-related infections, Covid clinical support, paediatric, neonatal and pregnancy related infections and other serious community and hospital-acquired infections. FSH is the new tertiary hospital centre for the WA State Burns, lung-/heart-lung transplant, allogeneic stem cell transplant and Rehabilitation (including spinal injuries) services and has busy Accident & Emergency, Intensive Care and Renal Transplant services. The ID department maintains close liaison with the Department of Microbiology and shares with this department responsibility for devising and implementing best practice antimicrobial policies and protocols within FSH. The department also directs the activities of the home intravenous antibiotic service (IDAC) based at FSH and Fremantle Hospitals. The FSH Infectious Diseases Department manages a very active antimicrobial stewardship program, taking a leadership role within the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS), which also includes Fremantle and Rockingham Hospitals and Peel Health Campus, in promoting best practice infection management and antimicrobial prescribing.
